Call this track "When Lenny met Lady"... Big Stuff is a song that Bernstein wrote for Billie Holiday to sing in the ballet Fancy Free. And so they came together in this song, these two American artists who lived and breathed music, who broke the rules and changed the game, who are both iconic and iconoclastic. It's one of those shimmering moments in American music that leaves us something spectacular in its one-of-a-kindness.
When I play this new arrangement (made for me by my friend Luke Russell), I feel Lenny and Billie at the piano with me, their presence larger than life, the smell of cigarettes and gardenias in the air, the inspiration I've taken from both of them guiding my fingers...
